The winter brings with it a few downsides, including the increased running costs of our homes. In the warmer months, you can rely on the higher temperatures to keep your home warm and help dry your clothes and sheets as quickly as possible once they have come out of the washing machine.

However, during the cold months, the drying process will take a lot longer if you are relying solely on air-drying and a lot of people are hesitant to use their tumble dryers with every cycle of laundry because they can be costly to run.

This hack is a great solution for those looking to cut down the amount of time they are running their tumble dryers, and it’s incredibly simple to use – cutting drying times by up to half.

Content creator – @the.cosyclub – explained the super easy hack in a video posted to their TikTok account and explained that you need to “watch this if you want to dry clothes 2x quicker”.

In the incredibly short clip – this hack is so simple it took only seven seconds to explain – the creator simply advised that viewers “chuck in a towel” to their tumble dryer alongside the wet laundry to help speed up the time it takes to dry their clothes.

“Simple but works” the Tiktoker captioned their hack video. According to Homes and Gardens, the way this hack works is that the dry towel is able to absorb a good amount of the excess moisture in the tumble dryer, which in turn speeds up the entire process.

Expert Laura Avila – a professional cleaner – explained to Homes and Gardens how it works. “An added dry towel absorbs moisture from the wet clothes, which reduces the amount of water that the dryer has to remove as it heats up.

“This means that the dryer can work more efficiently and dry the clothes faster. Additionally, the dry towel helps to create more air space in the dryer, breaking up big bundles of soaking clothes which allows hot air to circulate more freely and helps to speed up the drying process.”

While tumble dryers can be costly to run and sometimes you may want to avoid using them, there can be a hidden cost to air drying your clothes in the winter. This is because the moisture in the air when wet laundry is hanging around can lead to excess condensation, which in turn can cause mould and mildew to appear in your home – which has negative consequences for your health and the structural integrity of your home if left untreated.
