It’s exciting to see the new anime series that turn into the big hits of the generation and develop lengthy legacies that guarantee the properties remain household names for years. My Hero Academia is one of the past decade’s most popular and entertaining new series and as the anime heads into its fifth season it’s prepared to tackle bigger stories than ever before. My Hero Academia understands how to play into shonen anime genre tropes, but also push its material to challenging new places.

One of the series’ biggest strengths is the eclectic cast of powerful heroes that are involved. Tamaki Amajiki is an important hero that’s gained attention in the show’s most recent seasons, but there’s still plenty about him that people need to know.

10 What Is Tamaki Amajiki’s Quirk?

My Hero Academia showcases a wide array of Quirks that range from standard abilities to especially unusual powers. Tamaki Amajiki’s Manifest Quirk is definitely one of the more creative Quirks in the series, which makes it very deadly, but also quite difficult to master. Manifest transforms parts of Tamaki’s body with characteristics from the food that he’s recently eaten. These characteristics, whether they’re tentacles, talons, or wings, become stronger once they’re processed through him. Tamaki has figured out how to Manifest several abilities at once and control how his body processes these new traits.

9 Does He Have A Signature Move?

Some Quirks are simple in their execution, but others facilitate for more complex attacks to be developed that often become the signature moves of certain heroes. Tamaki Amajiki is a good example of this as he has more than one signature move that pushes his Quirk to the limit. Chimera Kraken features a number of thick tentacles that are used to overwhelm the opponent. Chimera Centaur is even more ridiculous and Tamaki’s lower half turns into a horse while the rest of his body spouts horns and vines as weapons. They’re both serious sights.

8 Is He Affiliated With A Hero Group?

My Hero Academia pushes a heavy sense of community at its central hero institution, U.A. High. There are lots of characters who can easily dominate on their own, but the professionals try to reiterate that a trusted team can be invaluable.

Tamaki Amajiki is fortunate enough to be one of the members of the Big Three, a trio that’s comprised of U.A. High’s strongest students. Tamaki Amajiki is joined by Mirio Togata and Nejire Hado and their Quirks all complement one another. Collectively, they’re a group that is practically impossible to beat and Tamaki is an important pillar of it.

7 What’s The Cause For His Social Anxiety?

It takes more than physical strength to be a hero and it’s not easy to always carry a confident and inspirational bravado in the face of danger. Tamaki Amajiki is one of the strongest students at U.A. High, but he still suffers from social anxiety and embarrassment over simple things. Tamaki’s timid nature stems back to his youth when he transferred to a new middle school and ostensibly had to start over. Curiously, Tamaki’s meek attitude mirrors that of My Hero Academia creator Kohei Horikoshi who faced the same shyness in his youth and is still anxious in large crowds.

6 Why Does His Hero Costume Contain Pouches?

There are many factors to consider when it comes to the life of a superhero and elements like a costume and supplies can be just as important as a Quirk even though they may seem superficial. Tamaki Amajiki’s Suneater attire contains loose fabrics to help with his transformations, but he’s also adorned with several pouches. This is far from a stylistic touch, and they actually contain different types of food that Tamaki can use to his advantage if the battle that he’s in takes an unexpected turn. It’s a smart way to mask his ammunition.

5 Has He Been Trained Or Mentored By Anyone?

It’s interesting to see how My Hero Academia treats different heroes in regards to how they become stronger and if they turn to others for help in this endeavor. Tamaki Amajiki is very much a loner by nature, but his work alongside Taishiro Toyomitsu, otherwise known as the pro hero Fat Gum, becomes formative for the character.

Fat Gum helps Tamaki build up his self-esteem and be more in control of his abilities. It’s not easy for Tamaki to trust others in this way and their personalities still clash, but they’ve become an important team in the series.

4 Does His Quirk Work On Other Quirks?

Usually what’s more important in battle than anything else is the ability to come up with a good strategy. Several characters wield incredible Quirks, but they’re never able to use them because of their impulsive nature. Tamaki Amajiki often comes up with impressive strategies that save the day and one of his smartest is to use a villain’s own Quirk against him. Tamaki secretly consumes some of the crystals that are a part of Yu Hojo’s Quirk. This allows his body to Manifest Hojo’s crystals in an even deadlier manner. It’s a tactic that can work on many people.

3 Why Does He Fight Barefoot?

Every character in My Hero Academia is full of such personality and it’s fun to see how that gets represented through elements like their costumes, attack names, or more innocuous behavior. Tamaki Amajiki’s costume has a distinct look and it goes for comfort and functionality more than it considers style. It’s easy to focus on Tamaki’s upper half since he often has some crazy Manifest features in play, so some don’t realize that Tamaki fights barefoot. This is because often his feet will transform into tentacles and talons and he doesn’t want to unnecessarily destroy his shoes.

2 Is He Guided By Strong Values?

There are heroes-in-training at U.A. High who are very powerful but also selfish or embody other traits that don’t fit the hero mold. Tamaki Amajiki cares about honor and respect, almost to a fault. He becomes upset when Class 1-A students don’t properly recognize the work that his friend, Mirio, has put in to reach his level of success. However, Tamaki even shows sympathy towards certain villains, like when Toya Setsuno, Yu Hojo, and Soramitsu Tabe put themselves down and refer to themselves as expendable casualties, which Tamaki argues against.

1 Can He Separate From His Quirk?

My Hero Academia has experimented with the idea that some Quirks are able to evolve or grow stronger. It’s satisfying to watch heroes get more comfortable in their roles and advance their powers at the same time. Tamaki Amajiki’s Manifest Quirk still has many mysteries that he continues to unlock, but one way in which his Quirk is particularly useful is that he can detach from it. Tamaki has used his tentacles to bind villains and then remove them from his body and carry on other business. It’s a serious advantage that most heroes don’t receive.
