In a shocking swerve, Mustafa Ali was revealed to be the leader of the group Retribution on Monday Night RAW.
On the October 5 episode of WWE’s flagship show, Ali showed his allegiances when he stood up to the members of Retribution only to turn around and command them following his match with MVP.
Retribution disrupted their singles match and surrounded Ali and The Hurt Business in the ring when MVP asked Mustafa Ali to align with them to take on the group who has caused chaos in the WWE for months.
Ali agreed and joined them, but quickly rolled to the outside to stand up to T-Bar and Mace, the two biggest and most recognizable members of Retribution. It looked like he was going to fight them, but instead he turned to order them to attack The Hurt Business.
Take a look at the swerve and Mustafa Ali being revealed as the leader of Retribution below.
Mustafa Ali joined the WWE in 2016 as part of the 205 Live cruiserweight division. He never won the Cruiserweight title, but would eventually be called up to SmackDown in 2018 where he would find mild success in the midcard.
Infamously, Mustafa Ali suffered an injury in 2019 that took him out of the Gauntlett Match to determine the number one contender for Daniel Bryan’s WWE Championship. Kofi Kingston would replace Ali, which would be the spark for Kofi-Mania that year.
Ali would return from injury and compete in big matches like the 2019 Money in the Bank ladder match and fight for the Intercontinental Championship, but would not win. He would eventually move to Monday Night RAW in the summer of 2020 where he was embroiled in a feud with The Hurt Business alongside Cedric Alexander, Apollo Crews and Ricochet.
The trajectory of Retribution has been an odd one. After first appearing as black-clad, faceless wrestlers who would cause chaos and destruction in the Performance Center, they would take their distraction tactics to the WWE Thunderdome, becoming a part of matches involving The Hurt Business, Apollo Crews, Keith Lee and even the WWE Champion Drew McIntyre.
A couple of weeks ago, Retribution appeared on the opening segment of RAW to deliver their mission statement and reveal that they have signed contracts with the WWE that lets them do what they want.
This is when we find out the main members of Retribution. Dominick Dijakovic is now T-Bar, Dio Madden is now Mace, and who we presume is Shane Thorne is SlapJack. Mia Yim and Mercedes Martinez were also revealed, but their new names have not been confirmed on WWE television as of yet.
