Elon Musk accused PM Justin Trudeau of ‘crushing free speech’ in Canada amid the country’s diplomatic tension with India. Tweeting about the recently announced CRTC curbs on social media and streaming services, the Tesla CEO highlighted that the Liberal Party leader is trying to crush free speech.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) on Friday said that all online services with audio or video content, including social media, that meet a revenue threshold will have to register with the federal regulator by November 28.
“Such services include streaming services, social media services, subscription television services that are available online,” the CRTC said.
Musk responded to the curb. “Trudeau is trying to crush free speech in Canada. Shameful,” he tweeted.
The Tesla founder’s criticism of Trudeau came amid the India-Canada tension over Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing in British Columbia in June. The Canadian PM, speaking in the parliament last month, said that he has ‘credible’ intelligence that ‘Indian government agents’ might be behind his death.
India EAM S Jaishankar, referring to the alleged violence and intimidation against diplomats and missions, said that the situation in Canada should not be treated as normal.
“Canada will always defend freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, and freedom of peaceful protest and it is extremely important to us… at the same time we are always there to prevent violence and to push back against hatred,” he said. “How would you react if you were in my shoes? If it was your diplomats, your embassy, your people, what would be your reaction?” he added.
