Mountain lion spotted in Portola Valley may have attacked dog

Authorities in San Mateo County warned residents in Portola Valley to be aware following an apparent mountain lion attack on a dog Thursday night.
The possible attack happened at about 9 p.m., San Mateo County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Tabak said in a statement. A family’s dog was found to be missing around the time that the mountain lion was seen in the area, he said.
The medium-size dog went missing near Alpine Road and Interstate 280. If an attack did happen, nobody witnessed it, according to Tabak.
The lion and dog have not been found.
The California Department of Fish and Game has been notified and is also investigating.
The sheriff’s office encouraged anyone who may see a mountain lion in the area to use caution and call them to report the sighting.
On March 17, a mountain lion scaled a 6-foot fence and attacked a family’s dog in the yard of a Woodside home, five miles from the Portola Valley sighting. Authorities did not find that lion, and the dog in that attack is expected to recover.
