A mother is under investigation after leaving her two children in a Northside parking lot Sunday.

The woman and a driver in another vehicle both sped off when they spotted an officer who was parking his patrol car to slow traffic near a crash site. The drivers nearly hit the children around 4 a.m. as they fled the parking lot of a Walgreens in the 6600 block of Airline Drive, according to OnScene TV.

The children, who are about 18 months and 4 years old, ran onto Airline trying to follow their mother’s car, reports said. A Houston police sergeant scooped them up and brought them back to his patrol car.

The mother eventually walked back to the scene and was taken into custody. The other vehicle was stopped by patrol officers.

Neither driver is likely to face charges but the Department of Family and Protective Services is opening an investigation, reports said.

The children were handed over to other family members who arrived at the scene, according to OnScene TV. Neither the Houston Police Department nor DFPS immediately responded to a request for comment.
