Morel’s walk-off blast puts Cubs into Wild Card position
Morel #Morel
The victory moves the Cubs into possession of the third NL Wild Card by a percentage point over the Reds and Marlins. With head-to-head record determining tiebreakers in the standings, Cincinnati has the edge on Chicago, 5-4, with four games remaining between the clubs from Sept. 1-3. The Marlins won the season series against the Cubs, 4-2.
The White Sox held a 3-0 lead entering the eighth inning and were in position to add on after loading the bases with no outs. But Cubs reliever Michael Fulmer took over from Jose Cuas with the bases loaded and struck out the side, keeping the deficit at three runs.
The Cubs began their comeback in the eighth on Nick Madrigal’s second homer of the year. In the ninth, Cody Bellinger led off with a double before Dansby Swanson’s walk, setting the stage for Morel’s dramatic homer.
The three-run dinger gave the Cubs the Crosstown Cup, thanks to a 3-1 season series victory over their city rivals.
