More layoffs in NC: 88 workers losing jobs at Matthews plant

CHARLOTTE – Box and packaging company Hood Container plans to lay off 88 workers at its Matthews corrugated box plant.

The facility is expected to close on Dec. 19, according to a filing with the N.C. Department of Commerce. The workers are not represented by a union.

[The layoffs are the latest to hit North Carolina’s furniture, paper, textile and meat manufacturers. According to layoff notices filed with the state Department of Commerce, overall closings and layoffs – including technology and life science firms – are double those reported in 2022 with 92 reports and more 8,000 workers affected.]

The cuts include 18 machine operators, 13 assistant machine operators, nine forklift operators and the plant manager.

The Atlanta-based company also operates a sheet plant in Arden, Burgaw and Lincolnton, and a corrugator plant in Jamestown and Winston-Salem. It also has a contract packaging facility in Rural Hall.
