Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny faces an “extended period of time” out injured after sustaining a “significant” right knee injury.
Elneny, 30, picked up the injury in a training session and has not featured since Arsenal’s 3-0 FA Cup third-round win over Oxford United on January 9.
Arsenal, though, appear to have already secured cover for Elneny in Mikel Arteta’s squad, with Chelsea’s Jorginho set to arrive in a £12million ($14.7m) deal.
An agreement has been reached between Chelsea and Arsenal and Jorginho, 31, is expected to sign a one-and-a-half-year contract with the option of a further year.
Arsenal did not put an exact timeframe on Elneny’s return from injury in a statement released on Tuesday.
It read: “Following an injury sustained in a recent training session, subsequent assessments have confirmed that Mohamed Elneny has a significant injury to his right knee.
“Mo has had successful surgery in London and will be ruled out for an extended period of time. A more detailed timescale will be established once the early stages of rehabilitation have been completed.
“Everyone at the club will be offering Mo all the support he needs and working hard with him so he can return to action as soon as possible.”
Arsenal return to Premier League action on Saturday with a trip to Everton.
