When it comes to Orange District Basketball Association coaches, there’s no one more qualified than Mitch Selwood. The former Australian under 19s representative is set to dive into the Aussie Hoops and mini ball coordinator role in 2021 as he looks to prepare young athletes for their progression through the age groups. Association president Craig Harvey expanded on the role and how Selwood will positively impact the junior basketball scene at Orange. “We found from an Orange point of view that there was a distinct missing link between Aussie Hoops and junior competition,” Harvey said. “Mitch is going to oversee the program and will work with a couple of primary schools to help give them an introduction into the sport. “It’s a role that we haven’t utilised correctly for many years.” As for Selwood’s qualifications, Harvey can’t think of anyone better to mentor the youngsters. “To have an ex-Australian rep and NBL player coaching my kids would be a dream come true,” he said. “Mitch has played with Andrew Bogut and Damien Martin and has been coached by Rob Beveridge. “He also understands what sort of program we need, here… he’s got more than enough credentials.” Harvey also paid his respects to the departing coordinator as Carmen Dederer paved the way for Selwood. “We’d like to thank her for her contribution,” he said. “She set up this program from nothing and she started working with Mitch before making the announcement that she was leaving.” Our journalists work hard to provide local, up-to-date news to the community.
