One gamer has found an unusual solution for getting across the sometimes massive maps in Mojang’s Minecraft, sharing a video of themselves going uphill on an iceboat in a pre-release build of Minecraft Java 1.19.4. While console and mobile players are most familiar with Minecraft’s Bedrock Edition, which tends to be more stable and works across a variety of gaming devices, the Java edition of Minecraft is how the franchise began and remains popular with many PC players.
Debuting as a small, indie PC title by Mojang Studios in 2009, Minecraft has become nearly ubiquitous across pop culture over the last decade. In addition to the core title, which is available on almost any device capable of playing games, there have also been multiple spin-offs of Minecraft ranging from the Diablo-esque Minecraft Dungeons to the Minecraft: Builders and Biomes board game. Regular crossovers with other popular properties have been one way that Mojang has managed to keep the franchise appealing for even long-time players, with a recent trailer revealing the surprise release of a Minecraft and Mega Man X crossover.

In a new post on the r/Minecraft subreddit, user SquareFinder shared a clip of themselves finding a surprising new use for the ice boating mechanic in a pre-release version of Minecraft Java 1.19.4. The short clip shows their character standing in front of an ice track that slowly rises in elevation in a stairstep fashion before stepping into a boat and zooming off up the track, ascending the incline with ease before coming to a stop at the end. While ice boat tracks in Minecraft are a popular means of getting around in the game, the ability to travel uphill in this version is something entirely new. For the full video, click here.
Fans of Minecraft browsing the subreddit were impressed with the unique use of the ice boating mechanic, with one response nothing that it could come in handy for quickly and conveniently moving villagers. Seeing the ice boat’s impressive uphill agility, another commenter stated “minecarts are getting owned,” leading to a spirited discussion in the replies on how Mojang could improve the iconic carts. Unfortunately for players looking to build an epic uphill ice track, several comments noted that the unusual ice boat behavior had already been documented as a bug and marked fixed in the next build according to Mojang’s bug-tracking site.
While the ability to race uphill on a speeding ice boat was apparently a one-off glitch that has already been fixed, this video shows a glimpse of the creative uses that players would have surely found for the unexpected mechanic. As exciting as zooming around on an ice boat can be, though, it’s still probably less convenient than just building a massive Minecraft road system.
Minecraft is available on Mobile, PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
