Military Order’s Epsom Derby odds
Military Order is, with Arrest, one of the two sons of the magnificent Frankel set to contest the Derby at Epsom this season, as connections hope to see one of the great horse’s progeny take this prize for the second time.
The Godolphin inmate won a Newmarket novice on his second start in the autumn and has triumphed in both outings this season at Newbury (1m 2f, soft).
William Buick has been on board for all four career runs to this point and will be eager now to try to double his tally of Derby winners at Epsom.
The promising colt looks sure to be a major contender for glory on the Surrey turf this weekend.
Who will be riding Military Order at Epsom?
Now the champion jockey in Britain for the first time, Buick will be in the driving seat as Military Order seeks to give Godolphin more Derby glory.
The race eluded Sheikh Mohammed’s operation for so long before Masar and Buick took centre stage in 2017. Now the famous blue silks could be first past the post again to make it three wins in six years.
Buick was born in Norway with hard-to-better equine influences: his Scottish-born father, Walter, a Scandinavian champion jockey on eight occasions, and his mother, Maria, a dressage rider and showjumper.
After being champion apprentice in Britain, he earned the job as stable jockey to John Gosden in 2009 and spent five years at Clarehaven, racking up Group 1 wins, before taking on his current job with Godolphin.
He has acquired a host of top-level successes in Britain, Ireland and far beyond but, as yet, that 2018 Derby win on Masar remains his sole British Classic. He has seven Breeders’ Cup wins, a Dubai World Cup and a long list of other major prizes on his CV.
Who is Military Order’s trainer?
Based in Newmarket, the home of English Flat racing, Appleby now seeks his third Derby win at Epsom with Military Order.
Masar (2018) and Adayar (2021) have helped to propel him to his status now as the leading trainer for the powerful Godolphin operation. The boys in blue had a long and disappointing pursuit of this Epsom Classic before Masar’s victory, and the Buick-Appleby combo have since reaped the rewards of that success.
Along the way, the trainer has toasted wins in the 2,000 Guineas, the Irish and French Derbies, the Melbourne Cup, multiple Breeders’ Cup wins and a host of Britain and Ireland’s Group 1 contests. In 2021 he became Britain’s champion trainer for the first time.
What are Military Order’s Derby chances?
At Lingfield on May 13, Military Order was a warm favourite to win the Derby Trial, which had to be run on the Polytrack because of unseasonably wet weather.
Buick’s mount got the perfect seam up the running rail as the field turned for home and shot to the front. It looked as though a straightforward success would ensue but eventual runner-up Waipiro came out after him and forced the Frankel colt to fight.
He showcased his stamina in doing so and eventually went clear for a smooth win. That bodes well for Epsom and he looks to have lots of scope for better at this mile-and-a-half distance.
