THE WOODLANDS – It wasn’t until the third day of the tournament before a complete round was completed. But when the Insperity Invitational went full bore, a Texas shootout came about.
Front and center on Sunday was John Daly with Mike Weir, David Toms and Tim Petrovic in the mix.
Daly was tied for the lead until putting a ball in the water on his approach shot on the 18th hole. His double bogey cost him a chance for victory, allowing Weir to walk away with the victory.
Weir, playing in his first Insperity, had a two-round total 10-under 134 to win by two shots over Daly, Toms and Petrovic. Weir shot a final-round 4-under 68 and pocketed the $337,500 first-place prize money.
The tournament was shortened to 36 holes, with a majority of the holes played on Sunday, because of rain and thunderstorms that hit the area hard the previous two days.Publish
Daly, the 2017 Insperity winner, shot a 3-under 69 in the final round over The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course.
At times over the back nine, Daly, Weir and Toms had a share of the lead.
Petrovic was the co-leader with Toms at 7 under at the conclusion of Sunday morning’s first round. Petrovic led early in Sunday’s second and final round before stumbling during a stretch where he dropped three shots over five holes.
Bob Estes shot his way into contention with a final-round 4-under 68, getting within one shot of the lead at 7 under. Estes bogeyed the final hole to finish 6 under.
After Friday’s first round was postponed, not one of the 81 golfers completed the first round on Saturday. They finished their opening round Sunday morning.
