Migrants not fazed by Rwanda bill or perilous Channel crossing

In the shadow of a recycling plant on the outskirts of Dunkirk, a string of shopping trolleys stick out of a frozen muddy bog littered with empty cans of kidney beans and plastic bags.

Khan Salar, 32, who ran a cricket club in a town just outside of Kabul, skipped along the makeshift bridge by his tent, exclaiming: “This side is my world and I am crossing over to heaven.”

The migrant, who said he fled persecution from the Taliban in 2021, feels much the same about crossing the ­English Channel to seek asylum in the UK, a place he feels he will finally be free to live his life according to his ­liberal values.
