Middlesbrough v Chelsea preview

Chelsea make the trip up to Teesside for the opening leg of their Carabao Cup semi final having finally found a good run of form, with the Blues having won five of their last six matches in all competitions.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side got the better of another Championship side on the weekend, winning 4-0 at home against Preston in the third round of the FA Cup to book their place in round four where they’ll meet Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.

In the Premier League, the west London side still sit just inside the top half of the table in 10th place, but three wins in their last four games has seen them close the gap considerably on the teams above them, and are now just three points behind the top seven.

The Blues have won the Carabao Cup on five previous occasions, but have reached the semi final stage three times since they last lifted the trophy, and have lost the last two finals they’ve been in, most recently falling to a penalty shoot-out defeat to Liverpool in 2022.

Middlesbrough have reached the last four of the Carabao Cup for the first time since they won the competition in 2004, their first and only time doing so.

Michael Carrick’s side were in FA Cup third round action against Premier League high-flyers Aston Villa on Saturday evening, falling to a 1-0 defeat, their third loss in their last four games.

Like their opponents tonight, Middlesbrough currently sit just inside the top half of their division, occupying 12th place in the Championship table, currently four points off the top six as they hunt the play-offs and place in the Premier League next season.

Saturday’s loss in the FA Cup means that Boro have now lost four out of their last five home matches, which doesn’t bode well for their prospects later tonight.

Chelsea have won all of their last nine matches against Middlesbrough, who haven’t even managed a goal against the Blues since a 2-1 win the Premier League against the Blues back in 2006.
