Michael Gray’s prediction on Jordan Rhodes has come true for Sheffield Wednesday vs Norwich City

Jordan Rhodes put Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 up over Norwich City at half-time as the Owls bid to improve their hopes of Championship survival following pre-match praise from former player Michael Gray.

Rhodes benefited from slack Norwich defending to capitalise and finish after Barry Bannan’s free-kick had been blocked and Joey Pelupessy’s rebound effort pinballed into the penalty area.

Gray was quizzed on what Wednesday would need to do in order to get a result against the league leaders and he tipped Rhodes to play a key role if Wednesday were to get anything from the game.

“I think they have got real good quality out wide,” he told Sky Sports Football.

“I love Adam Reach. He’s a fantastic player, better on the right-hand side, he’s got that turn of pace but that left foot of his is a wand and Jordan needs somebody like him.

“He needs to provide that service because he [Rhodes] needs to find himself again.

“He has obviously got that lack of confidence in front of goal, he has had some brilliant seasons but he is that box player and other than that you are struggling to get something else out of Jordan so if you can get that quality from those wide areas, he can cause anybody problems.”

Gray was also invited to comment on the situation generally at Wednesday and queried the decision made by Darren Moore to swap promotion-chasing Doncaster Rovers in League One for a side he feels are preparing themselves for relegation.

“It certainly looks that way,” he added.

“It’s a different club to the one I was at, we had 16 first-team players that we had to work with for a full season, I think the squad is obviously bigger now.

“But for one reason or another this season it has gone from bad to worse.

“They are not scoring goals, they are conceding goals, they obviously changed their manager three times this season.

“Darren has come in who I think is a fantastic addition but you do have to wonder from the club that he actually left to the one that he walked into whether he thinks he has made a mistake.”
