Miami freshman quarterback Emory Williams will start at Florida State on Saturday

After a week of intrigue surrounding the University of Miami quarterback position, the verdict is in.

The Miami Herald has confirmed that true freshman Emory Williams will get his second career start for the Hurricanes (6-3, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) on Saturday at No. 4 Florida State (9-0, 7-0), first reported by Brett McMurphy of @ActionNetworkHQ.

Fourth-year junior starter Tyler Van Dyke, who has had a tough stretch the past month, will start the game on the sideline. He arrived in Tallahassee with the rest of the team. A source said both quarterbacks took first-team snaps in practice this past week.

Williams is the first UM true freshman quarterback to start against Florida State since Brad Kaaya did it in 2014. FSU won that game 30-26, and Kaaya went on to become the ACC Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Williams has already played in four games, meaning once he enters the game on Saturday he will be unable to claim this season as a redshirt year. He is 36 of 48 (75 percent) for 295 yards and one touchdown, with one interception.

Williams previously started Oct. 21 at home against Clemson, when he led the Canes to a double overtime victory and was 24 of 33 (72.7) for 151 yards and one touchdown, with the one pick. UM kept the play calls extremely conservative and had Williams mostly throw very short passes.

Van Dyke had started eight of Miami’s nine games this season, but has thrown 10 interceptions in his past four games. He was hit hard and injured his right knee, ribs and back in UM’s Oct. 14 loss at North Carolina, and hasn’t been the same since.

Van Dyke, who early last month was No. 2 in the nation in passing efficiency, is now No. 41. Heading into FSU, he was 170 of 251 (67.7 percent) for 2,057 yards and 16 touchdowns, with 11 interceptions.

The Seminoles had no decisions to make about their quarterback. Redshirt senior signal-caller Jordan Travis of West Palm Beach is 186 of 289 (64.3) for 2,469 yards this season, with 19 touchdowns to only two interceptions. He has rushed for 190 yards and another seven touchdowns.
