The Mets got a real good glimpse at their future at the catching position during the 2022-23 season.

After free agent addition Omar Narvaez suffered a leg injury just four games into the regular season, top prospect Francisco Alvarez received the call-up for his second stint at the big-league level.

Alvarez initially split time with backup Tomas Nido for a bit, but he quickly began to run away with the starting spot.

The star rookie certainly had some ups and downs along the way, but he took the league by storm with his game-changing light-tower power. He appeared in 123 games and led all catchers and first year players with 25 home runs to go along with 63 RBI and a .721 OPS.

Though it certainly was an impressive showing, the youngster is hoping to be able to get even better over the offseason.

“It was one of those seasons where there was a lot to improve upon,” the youngster said. “With God’s will I’m going to continue working and continue doing what I need to do, but I view it as a good season, nothing extraordinary but it’s definitely something to build on.”

Alvarez will be looking to do so under the direction of a new manager in New York, fellow Venezuelan Carlos Mendoza, which is an opportunity that the youngster is super proud of and excited for.

“It brings me a lot of pride and joy that he’s been given this opportunity,” Alvarez said. “I think he’s one of those people that can open the doors for other Venezuelan potential managers because of the skillset he has. It feels really good and I’m proud of it.”

After appearing in just 57 games down the stretch in the second-half of what ended up being a lost season in New York, Alvarez is expected to take on more of a responsibility for Mendoza and the Mets during his sophomore campaign.

The 22-year-old has been talking of a different approach this offseason and says he’s looking forward to taking on the challenge.

“Last year was a different situation because of the ankle injury I had leading into the season,” he said. “This offseason I’ve had a full offseason to continue to work and change my routine a little bit. I hope the front office gives me the opportunity to play everyday if I’ve earned it.”
