Met Gala 2023: N.J. celebs from Anne Hathway to Cardi B, Christina Ricci, Lea Michele and more

A devastatingly chic New Jersey contingent brought glamour and the height of elegance to the 2023 Met Gala.

All the celebrities, from a pitch-perfect Anne Hathaway to the always game Cardi B and fashion plates Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra, gathered Monday night in New York to celebrate all things Karl Lagerfeld and launch the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” exhibition.

The Jersey set were among the many who paid tribute to Lagerfeld’s fashions, personal style, hair, accessories and even his cat, Choupette (as played by Doja Cat, Jared Leto and Lil Nas X).

The Costume Institute’s Lagerfeld display, opening May 5, spans Lagerfeld’s designs from the 1950s to 2019, the year he died. Honoring Lagerfeld’s work, the exhibition includes 150 looks, including his Karl Lagerfeld designs and his designs for Chanel, Balmain, Fendi, Patou and Chloé.

Anne Hathaway

Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, who grew up in Millburn, arrived with Donatella Versace, wearing beehive/bump-style hair piled up atop a white tweed gown that earned raves with its cutouts and embellished safety pins.

“It was meant to be sort of a marriage between Versace and Chanel,” Hathaway, 40, told Vogue hosts Chloe Fineman and Derek Blasberg.

The actor joined hands with Salma Hayek Pinault, who stepped out in vivid red, and reunited with Jared Leto, her co-star from the Apple TV+ WeWork series “WeCrashed.” Leto really committed to whole Choupette look, wearing a full-body cat costume.

Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas

Nick Jonas, who grew up in Wyckoff with the Jonas Brothers, made his entrance on the Met carpet with his wife, “Citadel” star Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

The couple actually made their debut together at the Met Gala in 2017 before they were in a relationship.

On Monday, both were both wearing Valentino in homage to Lagerfeld — Priyanka a black gown with white details and gloves and Nick a suit with a white shirt, black tie and black leather jacket.

“I think the black and white is a classic Karl look,” Jonas, 30, said on the Vogue red carpet livestream.

Cardi B

Cardi B, who has a home in Tenafly, celebrated Lagerfeld with a Chenpeng ballgown.

The gown had a tie and collar on top and oversized camellia flowers, the designer’s favorite, at its voluminous bottom.

Just to hit home her unquestionable adherence to the night’s theme, Cardi, 30, channeled Lagerfeld by pairing the look with silver hair and a black headband and gloves.

Christina Ricci

“Yellowjackets” star Christina Ricci, who grew up in Montclair, also paid tribute to Lagerfeld at the Met Gala.

Ricci, 43, glistened in a gown from Fendi by Kim Jones.

The actor paired the look, inspired by Lagerfeld’s time at Fendi, with blunt-cut bangs. As usual, Ricci’s husband, celebrity hairstylist Mark Hampton (they got married in 2021 and welcomed a daughter, Cleopatra, the same year), was responsible for her impeccable hair.

Lea Michele

Lea Michele, who has received thunderous applause for her turn as Fanny Brice in Broadway’s “Funny Girl,” was also at the Met Gala.

The actor and singer wore a silver Michael Kors gown with a keyhole design in the front and an open back. On Instagram, she shared photos breaking down the inspiration for her look — Barbra Streisand, the originator of Fanny Brice on Broadway in 1964.

Michele matched both her bob hair and her metallic glamour to Streisand’s classic looks.

Michele, 36, the former “Glee” star who grew up in Tenafly, surprised Vogue host La La Anthony with a little anecdote.

Apparently, the actor moved into Anthony’s former New York home and has been getting packages for her all the time. (She promises she didn’t open any.)
