Melania Trump was notably absent from the Trump family Christmas photo at Mar-a-Lago earlier this week which had quite a few people wondering why she was missing from such a festive holiday. Sources close to the former first lady not only revealed her whereabouts, but also shared the sad personal news that is affecting her right now.

Melania was with her mother, Amalija Knavs, who has been “ailing” and in the hospital, according to a Fox News Digital source. “Melania has always been very devoted to her entire family,” they explained. “It should be no surprise that she spent this Christmas with her ailing mother.” Melania and Donald Trump’s son Barron, 17, spent the day with his father and siblings while his mother tended to Knavs.

This personal development in Melania’s life could also be the reason why Mar-a-Lago club members and Palm Beach residents haven’t spotted her for quite some time. “It’s like a mystery. It’s certainly talked about. She rarely exits Mar-a-Lago. It’s a strange, isolated life they have in that place,” noted Laurence Leamer, author of Mar-a-Lago: Inside the Gates of Power at Donald Trump’s Presidential Palace. And Melania’s care toward her mother fits right in with prioritization of family over politics — she and Barron didn’t move into the White House until he had completed his school year in June 2021.

Knavs’ health might also throw a curveball in Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign since he’s reportedly expecting Melania to join him for major events in the coming year. “Trump and his family are so secure that he will become president again that insiders at Mar-a-Lago say he’s reached an agreement with Melania to step up top-tier diplomatic appearances in 2024,” a family insider told Page Six. “Melania realizes it’s her time to join the ranks of historic first ladies and leave her mark on history … She feels better prepared for her potential role the second time around.”

However, Melania is known to live a very independent life from Donald Trump, and she won’t be coerced into doing anything she’s not ready for. The former first lady has historically put her personal life ahead of her husband’s political life, and this heartbreaking situation with her mother will be no different.
