Oprah Winfrey’s conversation with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle couldn’t be contained to one interview. After the formal sit down, Winfrey also came to Harry and Meghan’s home in Montecito.
During her visit, they discussed Harry’s grandfather Prince Philip, who, earlier that day, had been admitted to the hospital.
“This morning, I woke up earlier than H, and saw a note from someone on our team in the UK saying that the Duke of Edinburgh had gone to the hospital. But I just picked up the phone and I called the Queen just to check in,” Meghan shared. “That’s what we do, being able to default to not having to every moment go, ‘Is that appropriate?'”
Then, Harry added:
“For so many in my family, what they do is there’s a level of control in that because they’re fearful of what the papers are going to say about them. Whereas with us it was just like, just be yourself. Just be genuine. Just be authentic. If you get it wrong, get it wrong, if you get it right you get it right.”
Buckingham Palace confirmed that Prince Philip had been admitted to the hospital in mid-February.
“The Duke’s admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’s Doctor, after feeling unwell,” read a statement from a palace spokesperson at the time. “The Duke is expected to remain in hospital for a few days of observation and rest.”
The Palace later confirmed that he was suffering from an infection, and was transferred to another hospital, where he “underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition.”
Following the procedure, he was transferred back to King Edward VII’s Hospital on March 5. “The Duke is expected to remain in hospital for continuing treatment for a number of days,” reads a statement released that day.
