Medical insider: Darwin Nunez has ‘delayed onset muscle’ issue amid new Liverpool reveal

Liverpool hitman Darwin Nunez has returned from international duty with “delayed onset muscle soreness”.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis.

Nunez, 23, has so far failed to live up to his billing following his £85million move from Benfica in June.

He did, however, start both of Uruguay’s recent friendlies against Iran and Canada, finding the back of the net in the second fixture.

But the powerful striker was on the field only for the dying moments in Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Brighton last Saturday (1 October), a result that saw Jurgen Klopp’s side fall to 9th in the league.

As quoted by The Sun on Monday (3 October), the manager revealed that Nunez has “DOMS in the hamstrings” and that the medical team had advised him to play reduced minutes.

Dinnery explained the condition, which is unlikely to affect Nunez’s participation in the Champions League clash against Rangers on Tuesday (5 September).

“DOMS is delayed onset of muscle soreness,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“With Nunez, he has relatively minutes at Liverpool. He’s only started twice in the Premier League and accrued 177 minutes.

“He almost played the same number of minutes for the national team as he had across the Premier League season.

“There are several reasons why research tells us that the soreness in the muscle is due to up four influencing factors. That can be anything from muscle damage to inflammation to a spasm to a build-up of lactic acid.

“What that does is affect the range of motion. If anything is slightly out of sequence, the possibility of picking an up injury is increased.

“That’s why you always want to err on the side of caution and not take any chances.”
