Mayweather vs. Paul: Luis Arias out-muscles Jarrett Hurd for split decision victory

Jarrett Hurd was a great champion but hasn’t looked the same since losing against Julian Williams. He didn’t impress against Luis Arias.
Jarrett Hurd once commanded the super welterweight division, but a 2019 loss to Julian Williams changed all that. In one appearance since his lone loss, he hasn’t looked the same. On the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Logan Paul undercard on Sunday, June 6, Hurd’s career took a nosedive after dropping a split decision to Luis Arias.
Hurd held the IBO, WBA, and IBF titles until he surrendered them to Williams in 2019. A lackluster victory against Francisco Santana in 2020 didn’t restore confidence in Hurd, but he hoped to look strong against Arias. That didn’t happen.
Arias came out fast in round 1, blasting Hurd with a right cross. Hurd woke up after the first minute and came forward with his jab. Arias was the more active fighter and took the round on FanSided’s sore card.
Things got interesting in round 2. The rain started falling at the outdoor Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL. Although the ring was covered, the rain blew into the ring and made conditions slippery. The fight had to be stopped after Arias slipped and the canvas could be dried.
The fight went downhill for Hurd quickly. Round by round, Arias found Hurd’s head with his right hand. They fought at close quarters, but Arias outworked and out-landed Hurd.
Hurd had his moments in round 5, but Arias still got the better of Hurd.
Hurd hurt Arias in the last minute of round 6 with his powerful right hook, but Arias came right back. Arias showed bad body language in a round that Hurd won by battling back down the stretch.
Hurd lost his composure in round 7 and hit Arias low twice. It didn’t look intentional, but the referee warned him both times. No points were deducted. Hurd and Arias exchanged blows as the fight emerged into an all-out war.
Arias seems to be winning the fight for the remaining rounds, but Arias tripped and was pushed down in round 9, but the referee mistakenly ruled it a knockdown.
In round 10, Arias drilled Hurd with more right hooks that stunned Hurd. He made it through the end of the round, but his face was bloodied, and his reputation appeared stalled.
The judges returned scores of 95-94 for Hurd, 97-93 for Arias, and 96-93 for Arias. Arias picks up the upset win against Hurd. It’s hard to tell where Hurd goes from here, but his days as a championship contender could be over.
