Max Scherzer will start Opening Day for the Mets, and Justin Verlander will get the home opener.
The Mets have made pitching decisions for two key dates to start the season.
According to Mike Puma of The New York Post, ace Max Scherzer will start against the Miami Marlins on Opening Day. Co-ace Justin Verlander will start the Mets’ home opener on April 6.
Mets manager Buck Showalter has hinted that one of his aces, presumably Verlander, will start Game 3 against the Marlins in order to be on regular rest for the home opener.
This will be Scherzer’s first Opening Day start as a Met, as a hamstring issue pushed him to the second game of the season last year.
The Mets initially planned on having Jacob deGrom start on Opening Day last season, but he went down with a stress reaction in his shoulder. Along with Scherzer’s injury, these factors forced Tylor Megill to make the Opening Day start.
The Mets will play eight straight games to open up the season, four in Miami and three in Milwaukee against the Brewers before coming home to face the Marlins again.
