While Hull FC continue to be linked with Bevan French, Matt Peet’s comments suggest the Wigan Warriors star has a different location in mind. Rumours have been swirling for weeks that the Black and Whites are plotting a move for the speedster, who scored a hat-trick in Wigan’s win over Salford Red Devils on Friday.

Inevitably, his future was the subject of conversation in Peet’s post-match interview with Sky Sports. However, his comments suggested that French’s focus is on earning a deal in the NRL, rather than switching between two Super League clubs.

When asked about French’s future, he said: “We love Bevan and we’ve made it clear we want him to stay.

“I speak regularly with Bevan about his future but we want our players to achieve their ambition but Bevan’s long-term ambition is in the NRL but as long as we want to keep him we want to give him the platform.”

His comments suggest that, if French is to leave Wigan it will be for a move down under, rather than one down the M62. Black and Whites coach Brett Hodgson refused to be drawn on the speculation when asked in his pre-match press conference.

“I appreciate you do have to ask but I hope you appreciate that I’m not going to deal with speculation on any player, let alone at our club or somewhere else. We are in the market for a number of players, we will also have some of our players potentially not here beyond this contract. That’s part of the job.”
