The 21-year-old, who has not played for United since he was arrested in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault, has moved to Getafe on loan for the rest of the season.

All charges against Greenwood were dropped in February, and United have spent several months deciding his future at Old Trafford, including the prospect of reintegrating him into Erik ten Hag’s squad this season.

However, United ultimately decided against bringing Greenwood back and the player completed a move to La Liga in the final few hours of the summer transfer window.

A statement released by United on Friday evening read: ‘Mason Greenwood has signed for La Liga side Getafe CF on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance.

‘The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.

‘The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.’

United had received heavy backlash from supporters over their plan to reintegrate Greenwood and while the 21-year-old was intent on continuing his playing career, it was always unlikely that he would join another Premier League club.

He now joins Getafe who finished 15th in La Liga last season, two points above the relegation zone.

Greenwood will still have a year remaining on his £75,000-a-week contract with United when his loan deal with Getafe ends next summer.

Lazio had also held talks to sign Greenwood on the final day of the summer transfer window but the Italian club claimed that United did not complete the paperwork in time.

‘I tried until the last minute,’ Lazio’s president, Claudio Lotito, told La Lazio Siamo Noi shortly after the Italian transfer window closed on Friday evening.

‘They didn’t countersign in time. He wanted to come to Lazio.’
