Markets down, but this pair of Birmingham-area stocks gained ground

Birmingham #Birmingham

The start of a shortened trading week Tuesday was not kind to most of the stocks on our Birmingham and Alabama Stock Report as all but five took losses and 14 saw drops of at least 2%. There was a local silver lining, however.

Community Health Systems took the biggest hit, dropping 5.6%.

Birmingham-based ServisFirst Bancshares was next, falling 4.6%, while Vulcan Materials lost 3%.

On the bright side: Area stocks Warrior Met Coal and U.S. Steel were two of the few gainers, managing pickups of .9% and .5%, respectively.

Overall, major stock indexes on Wall Street closed lower Tuesday, giving back some of their recent gains as traders returned from a long holiday weekend.

The S&P 500 fell 0.4%, while the Nasdaq composite slipped 0.1%. Both indexes were coming off their second weekly gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.6%.
