After Nintendo premiered the trailer for its upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie in a Direct today, fans were quick to notice that Mario’s voice sounded pretty similar to Chris Pratt’s normal voice, which inevitably led to some disappointment. However, a few fans noticed that Mario’s voice in the trailer’s French dub sounds a lot more similar to that of Mario’s original voice actor, Charles Martinet.

In comparison to Pratt’s Brooklyn-esque voice in the English trailer, in this clip, Mario sounds pretty joyous while jumping across mushrooms as the trailer comes to a close. This has led some fans to favor the French dub over the original, with some English-speaking fans even planning to watch the full movie’s French dub instead just for Mario’s voice.

Meanwhile, here’s what we think the Mario movie trailer would sound like if Charles Martinet were actually playing Mario.

Despite fans’ reactions to the trailer, Pratt drummed up some serious excitement for his Mario voice in the months leading up to the trailer’s release. In June, he said it would be “unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world,” and producer Chris Meledandri said “criticism will evaporate” when people hear Pratt’s performance as Mario.

The Super Mario Bros. movie is slated to release on April 7, 2023. Aside from Chris Pratt’s voice, fans will also hear Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.
