The first poster for Illumination Entertainment’s Super Mario Bros. movie has been revealed, with the highly detailed poster being packed to the brim with Easter eggs and references – possibly even hinting at the movie’s biggest missing video game character. Many players were wary about Illumination’s upcoming adaptation, but the first poster seems to have relieved skeptics. The first poster for Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. movie is incredibly faithful to the source material, with the first look providing a lot to unpack.
Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. movie has been in development since 2017, acting as part of Nintendo’s multimedia collaboration with the company, with the film following in the footsteps of Universal Studio’s Super Nintendo World expansion. While the film has been under wraps for some time, a Nintendo Direct in September 2021 gave the first major details for the film, announcing a voice cast that includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya-Taylor Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. Of the nine characters that were announced, some were fairly obscure, including Cranky Kong and Foreman Spike. With this announcement came the reveal that the film would release in December 2022, although the Super Mario Bros. movie was later delayed to April 2023. Since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting further news about the project, with the strange cast and questionable track record of Illumination leaving many on the edge of their seats.

The first poster for the Super Mario Bros. movie shows the titular plumber standing in the middle of a bustling Mushroom Kingdom, featuring shops, several Toads, various enemies from the games, and famous landmarks including Princess Peach’s castle. The poster is incredibly busy, but when examining it can be seen that several details hint at another major unannounced Mario character: Yoshi. Yoshi is Mario’s rideable dinosaur friend, with the iconic green character representing a species that frequently pops up throughout the Mario series. Although Yoshi wasn’t announced among the known cast of the Super Mario Bros. movie, it is almost impossible to deny that the dinosaur will appear in the movie now. On the left of the poster, a Yoshi egg can be seen in the antiques shop, with Yoshi spawning out of the egg in the games. Further cementing his appearance, the right of the poster features some kind of produce shop, featuring fruits that are associated with Yoshi in games like Yoshi’s Story and Super Mario Sunshine.
Yoshi has become a staple of the Mario series, appearing in nearly every mainline and spin-off Mario game, and even getting his own series of platformers and puzzle games. Yoshi is arguably one of the quintessential mascots of the Mario series, and it would be a major disservice to the character’s legacy to not feature him in the Super Mario Bros. movie. On top of that, Illumination loves marketable characters like the Minions, and Yoshi is perfect for that role in the Super Mario Bros. movie. Universal Studios’ Super Nintendo World even has a whole dark ride dedicated to Yoshi, highlighting just how important the species is to the series.
With the Super Mario Bros. movie having relatively more obscure characters like Foreman Spike in the film, it would be a shame not to feature Yoshi. However, the fact that a Yoshi egg appears in the poster seems to confirm that the character will at least be referenced in the film, if not seen outright. While Yoshi’s appearance in the Super Mario Bros. movie is still unconfirmed, the teases still bode well for the project.
