Erik ten Hag determined to give fans second piece of silverware
Marcus Rashford hinted that trophies mean more to him than individual targets as talks over a new Manchester United deal continue.
The England forward has 29 goals in all competitions this season – his best ever return in a single campaign by a considerable distance. One of those goals came in the Carabao Cup final, where United’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle at Wembley secured a first trophy since 2017.
Rashford was also part of the squad in 2017 when United won two cups under Jose Mourinho. Erik ten Hag has helped the Red Devils get back on the right track and their forward’s latest comments make clear where his priorities lie.
“Individually, yes,” Rashford told Premier League Productions (via club media ) when asked if this was his best season so far. “But the year when Jose [Mourinho] was here, we won three trophies. For me, it’s about the trophies.
“We’ve got the opportunity to secure Champions League football and the big one is to win another piece of silverware. That’s what we’re going to try to do. So that’s what the aim is now.”
United still have an opportunity to end their first season under Ten Hag with two trophies, having set up an FA Cup final meeting with Manchester City. However, the Dutchman fell short in his efforts to replicate Mourinho’s Europa League success, with United losing to Sevilla at the quarter-final stage.

Rashford’s current Manchester United deal runs until the summer of 2024, with the club exercising a one-year extension option in December. Talks are ongoing over a longer extension, though, with the 25-year-old top-scoring for the club as they close in on a Champions League return.
According to The Telegraph, United are making ‘good progress’ in discussions with Rashford. Any new deal is likely to make the forward one of the club’s best-paid players – an honour currently held by David de Gea, who is himself in talks over a new deal.
Talks with Rashford look unlikely to change the fact that United are still on the lookout for a new central striker. The future of on-loan Wout Weghorst is yet to be decided, but a number of targets are being considered, including Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen and Randal Kolo Muani.
Paris Saint-Germain are reported to be among the clubs ready to pounce if Rashford is unable to agree new terms with his boyhood club. PSG have explored a move for the Englishman in the past, and could begin next season with a new-look attack as they prepare to potentially lose both Lionel Messi and Neymar in the summer window.
