Marcus Rashford has been labelled pathetic as Manchester United suffer a shock start against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Forest rushed into an early two-goal lead at Old Trafford in astonishing circumstances to leave the home crowd stunned.

And Rashford has come under fire for some abysmal defending in the opening goal.

Taiwo Awoniyi shrugged off the United star to fire home after barely two minutes played.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Dean Ashton vented at the England international and said: “Disastrous start for United. That is the one player you don’t want it to fall to.

“He would’ve loved to see Rashford there. He just shrugged him aside!

“Marcus Rashford, I’m sorry, that was pathetic defending. You had the chance to tackle and it was a pathetic effort.”

But even more chaos was set to go ahead as just seconds later, Willy Boly doubled Forest’s lead to put them in dreamland.

Morgan Gibbs-White crossed the ball to find the defender, who headed in without barely moving.

While it was a disastrous opening four minutes for United, they managed to regroup and have since taken control of possession.

And after ramping up their efforts, that pressure paid off when Christian Eriksen grabbed one back.

It was Rashford to make the goal, atoning for his earlier mistake by making full use of his skillset in a one-on-one with Serge Aurier.

He left the Frenchman for dead with a remarkable turn of pace from out wide before putting the ball on a plate for the Denmark international.

The midfielder, playing in place of the injured Mason Mount, reduced to deficit to one with a glancing finish to reignite the Old Trafford crowd.

Ashton said on commentary for talkSPORT: “Manchester United have upped the tempo and Forest can’t get out. They can’t just lump it long, they need to look for feet.”
