Marcus Rashford has hailed ‘unbelievable’ Anthony Martial, who he says is a ‘massive player’ for Manchester United as the Frenchman continues his impressive return from injury.

It has been a frustrating start to the season for Martial after impressing new manager Erik ten Hag in friendlies over the summer, his campaign has largely been blighted by fitness problems so far.

However, he came off the bench to score twice in the Manchester derby on Sunday and then was brought on again in the Europa League on Thursday and scored an excellent goal against Omonia in Cyprus.

The 26-year-old will be pushing for a place in the starting line-up and Rashford, who scored twice on Thursday night in the 3-2 win, says it is huge for the Red Devils to have the France international back.

‘He is a massive player for us, has been for a long time,’ said Rashford of his teammate. ‘When he is happy and at it he is an unbelievable player.

‘We’ve both been injured, him longer than me, so it is good for him to get minutes and make an impact.’

It is a remarkable turnaround for Martial who had fallen entirely out of favour at Old Trafford and spent the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla, where he also failed to impress.

His fate at United rested on Ten Hag, who appears to be a fan of the forward and Martial has repaid the faith with good performances so far.

Rashford is also enjoying a return to prominence at Old Trafford after a season to forget last time around, scoring his fourth and fifth goals of the season on Thursday.

‘Job done, but we would have liked to have played better. We didn’t defend badly, but we made mistakes,’ he said.

‘The first 35 minutes until they scored we were playing well, we just could have got in behind them more. Then when he made the subs he [Erik ten Hag] wanted us to be more dynamic, take chances going forward and score goals.’
