Marcel Sabitzer survived a VAR review after his studs made contact with the knee of Leicester defender Wout Faes.
Manchester United midfielder Sabitzer was not even shown a yellow card by on-field referee Stuart Attwell.
But a VAR check then studied replays to decide whether Sabitzer should have been sent off.
Sabitzer was found not guilty by that review.
However, former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness was adamant that Sabitzer should have seen red.
The incident had occurred in the 41st minute of Sunday’s Premier League game between United and Leicester.
Speaking on Sky Sports during the half-time interval, Souness suggested that Sabitzer had tried to injure Faes.
Asked if United were lucky still to have 11 players on the pitch, Souness replied: “100%. I think this is a red card, for several reasons.
“Sabitzer has turned side on to him. If you are going to ‘do’ someone, that is how you do it. You turn side on.
“If he makes contact with the ball, what’s he going to do with the ball? He’s looking for the player.
“I don’t care what some referee who has never played the game says. That is a sending off. That is dangerous play.
“If that’s not dangerous play, what is?”
