Maple Leafs update on Ilya Samsonov.

Samsonov #Samsonov

The Toronto Maple Leafs may be in a dire goaltending situation.

On Saturday night the Leafs lost goaltender Ilya Samsonov to injury, although it isn’t entirely clear when Samsonov got hurt. That being said, the Maple Leafs have now officially confirmed that Samsonov is out due to injury, with the team disclosing that this is a knee injury.

When the Maple Leafs mentioned a knee injury my thoughts went back to the penalty shot from Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand earlier in the period. Marchand would not only make good on the penalty shot, but he appeared to fool Samsonov on the play resulting in the Leafs goaltender falling backwards awkwardly into his own net. Samsonov’s leg even appeared to buckle around the knee area, although this was much earlier in the period so it could be entirely unrelated.

Here’s a look at the penalty shot:

We will now await word on the severity of this knee injury, something that could be a big issue for the Leafs moving forward. It is important to note that the Leafs are already without veteran goaltender Matt Murray who was injured earlier in the season.
