Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner and his fiancée were victims of a carjacking back in May. Toronto Police have made an arrest related to the incident just 10 months later.
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner said a detective with the Toronto Police Service had called him a couple of days ago to tell him a couple of arrests were going to be announced into a carjacking incident he went through back in May.
“I was getting updates throughout but really not trying to follow it. Not trying to re-live that moment too many times, just trying to forget about it, get over it and just realize it’s an unlucky situation you’re part of and hopefully just a one-time thing,” Marner said following his team’s practice on Friday.
Toronto Police Services announced the arrests of two men in connection with the carjacking while one person is still outstanding.
“I give my thanks and my gratitude and appreciation because it wasn’t easy,” Marner said of the incident. “There weren’t many cameras or anything around. The sun was going down so it was tough to see everything. But they did a great job of just sticking with it and getting the job done.”
On May 16, Marner and his fiancée Stephanie LeChance were in the Queensway and Islington area when they were allegedly carjacked. The suspects took off with his 2021 Land Rover which has since been recovered by police.
Marner has talked about the incident a number of times and has promoted the mental health aspect of it. He has used his ‘Marner Assist Fund’ to advocate to talk to people about any sort of trauma or crisis.
He also used mental health day to speak to reporters about the issue following a scrum back in January.
Now that arrests have been made, Marner is hoping it’s another step to putting the incident in his behind him.
“It’s finally good that I don’t probably have to talk about it anymore, to be honest,” Marner said. “It’s a moment you don’t want anyone you know personally or just anyone to be a part of, it’s a scary situation.”
In the release, Toronto Police say there is a suspect still outstanding, but Marner’s carjacking incident put a spotlight on the apparent spike in car theft around the city. Marner was thankful that TPS was on the case.
“It’s great, I think strictly just because that problem’s been going on for a while now in Toronto and obviously it’s been pretty hard to try and narrow it down to who the people are because of what they’re doing, what they’re wearing, hiding their faces,’ Marner said. “I think it just puts a lot of trust in the Toronto Police and just knowing that they’re getting the job done, not stopping and trying to fix this problem. It’s a great relief to try and get that off the streets and they want this place to be safe as it should be.”
