Manchester United have re-signed experienced defender Jonny Evans on a short-term deal and the 35-year-old is in line to feature in the upcoming pre-season games.

Evans, who left Old Trafford in the summer of 2015 having made 198 appearances, had spent the last five years at Leicester City who were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season.

The former Northern Ireland international’s contract with the Foxes expired earlier this month and he had been training with United’s Under-21s in a bit to maintain his fitness.

Erik ten Hag, however, has seen fit to include Evans, linked with a move to Everton, in his squad for the game against Lyon in Edinburgh on Wednesday and he will then travel San Diego with United’s academy while the first-team squad are in New York.

Tyrell Malacia and Rhys Bennett, meanwhile. have been ruled out of the Lyon match and the United States trip through injury.

Ten Hag had not been planning to strengthen his central defence this summer but the picture could change depending on whether Harry Maguire decides to pursue a move or not.

The England international was stripped of the captaincy earlier this week and although he insists he remains committed to United, reported interest from the likes of Tottenham, Chelsea and West Ham could turn his head.

Reacting to Ten Hag’s ruthless decision, Maguire said: ‘After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain.

‘He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.

‘So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband. Since the day I took on the role, three and half years ago, it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date.

‘It’s one of the greatest honours in club football. I’ve done everything I possibly could to help United be successful – on and off the field.

‘I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility and I wish whoever now takes it on every success and they will have my full support.’
