Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes has now agreed personal terms with Manchester City after their interest first emerged this week, a new report has revealed.

Ornstein detailed at the time that Nunes was ‘high among a small number of candidates’ to fill the void left by the departure of Ilkay Gundogan to FC Barcelona earlier on this summer, as well as Kevin De Bruyne – who is ruled out for the remainder of 2023 through injury.

Manchester City had originally shown an interest in West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta this summer, and there is a belief in various quarters that a deal would have been completed in the region of £80 million should an FA investigation into betting allegations not have emerged.

Now, it appears as though Nunes is Manchester City’s number one candidate for their opening in the centre of midfield, despite the likes of Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze also featuring on their shortlist.

That is according to the information of Fabrizio Romano on Wednesday evening, who states that Manchester City have now submitted an initial bid to Wolverhampton Wanderers for Matheus Nunes, in excess of €50 million with add-ons discussed in the package.

It is further revealed that Nunes himself has now accepted Manchester City as a potential next destination during the closing stages of the transfer window, having already agreed personal terms with the Premier League champions.

Manchester City’s pursuit of Matheus Nunes comes after the club failed in their pursuit of West Ham United and Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta – who was on the verge of completing an £80 million move to the Etihad Stadium.

However, following the emergence of an investigation from the FA and FIFA into allegations of betting from within Paqueta’s close circle, a move was called off and the player is almost certain to remain at the London Stadium this summer.

Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze is another star admired by those at the Etihad Stadium, as Manchester City scouts thought highly of the 25-year-old’s ability to control games for the Selhurst Park club last season.

This is a developing story. More to follow.
