Mason Mount slammed by former Man Utd star after poor start – “Nowhere to be seen”

On the pitch, Manchester United have endured a difficult start to the league season and have lost four of their opening eight games.

However, off the pitch, the long-running saga surrounding a takeover of the Red Devils appears to be finally nearing an end. 11 months after it became clear that the club was on the market, INEOS founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe is on the verge of completing a £1.4billion deal which will see him own a quarter of the club next week once the proposal is ratified among club chiefs a board meeting.

INEOS are expected to be in control of football operations at Old Trafford, though the Glazers will retain their status as majority owners. It remains to be seen what kind of on-pitch decisions Ratcliffe has in store.

With that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a look at some of the main Red Devils-related headlines on Monday, October 16.

The news has not led to any celebrations from United’s Supporters’ Trust, who want further clarity on the merits of Ratcliffe’s purchase of 25 per cent of the club.

The response from the organisation to the news hasn’t exactly been one of excitement and has been interpreted by many as a dig at the current owners. In a statement, the trust claims: “It would be wildly optimistic to think the Glazers are acting in the interests of supporters or are making ownership decisions which don’t centre on their own priorities.

“We call upon all parties to put Man United interests before their own interests. If the reports are true regarding INEOS obtaining a 25% stake in our club there are a number of questions which need clarity before supporters can make any judgement on its merits.”

The trust has also compiled a list of 11 of the most pressing questions they feel need answering before things go further, such as which members of the Glazer family will remain shareholders after this transaction goes through, and whether the Glazers will still have full control of the club.

United legend and ex-club captain Gary Neville has claimed there is still so much that needs to be addressed at Old Trafford ahead of Ratcliffe’s purchase of a stake.

Posting on social media on Sunday, he said: “My preference is and always will be now for a Glazer family full exit. They have overstayed their welcome in Manchester yet seem oblivious to this fact.”

Neville has often been outspoken with his anti-Glazer stance and went on to identify as many as 16 different questions that the fans will want answered sooner rather than later.

The issues raised by Neville included whether any of the Glazers would now depart, who now has control over sporting matters and if Old Trafford would be ‘significantly’ redeveloped.

Ratcliffe is unlikely to put Erik ten Hag’s future as manager under any great pressure once his company complete their 25 per cent acquisition of the club.

Mirror Football understands that while Britain’s second-richest man Ratcliffe will soon oversee player incomings and departures, as well as that of the management, coaching and football staff, Ten Hag’s position is safe.

Ratcliffe is well aware of the struggles of elite-level football, given he has been the owner of French side Nice and Swiss Super League team FC Lausanne-Sport through INEOS since 2019 and 2017 respectively. Ten Hag has already met the billionaire when the pair crossed paths at the club’s Carrington training base back in March.
