Manchester United were hammered 7-0 by Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday – leaving Roy Keane and Gary Neville far from impressed.
The Red Devils conceded six goals during the second half to consign them to their biggest ever loss to Liverpool in any competition. Keane and Neville both agreed that such a collapse would have never happened during their time together at Old Trafford.
“It never happened to us out there because we were aware of what could happen – you show respect, you’re not complacent, you’re not naive,” uttered Neville. Keane added, “Like you said Gary, we won the league – but this team won’t be winning the league.”
That aside, here is the best of the reaction from Sunday’s historic game…
Fernandes reflects on famous loss
United’s stand-in skipper Bruno Fernandes spoke to Sky Sports shortly after his team’s remarkable collapse at Anfield.
“I think obviously the second half was not at our level,” said Fernandes – just seven days after lifting the Carabao Cup at Wembley. “We gave too much away, we gave too much time and counters to them and we knew how much of a threat they are with that.

Keane calls out players
Keane did not hold back in his assessment of United’s display on Sunday. He told Sky Sports, “I never thought United were back to their very best, they’ve had some good results, but they have been giving teams chances and they’ve been let them off the hook.
“The chances they gave up today, Liverpool didn’t let them off the hook and punished them. That’s where they deserve credit, they created opportunities, they were clinical, ruthless. They kept going, wanted more goals.
“But the senior players – I always look at them. The ones we give a big build-up to, the experienced ones, will be the ones who let the club down today.”
Keane added, “You’d go into hiding if you were a player. Never mind a few days, I think I’d go missing for a few months, it really is that embarrassing for the players. What can you do, that’s the game, they’ve got to bounce back.”

Neville’s verdict on first goal
Neville pinned the blame for Cody Gakpo’s opening goal – which opened the floodgates – on Diogo Dalot, Fred and Raphael Varane.
“We talked about the selection of Dalot versus [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka before the game,” noted Neville on Sky Sports commentary.
“He [Dalot] makes the first mistake by going in and not stopping Robertson, allowing him to turn. The next mistake is the one where Fred’s allowed Gakpo to go in behind, and then Varane should never allow Gakpo on his right foot, he has to push him onto his left.
“One mistake after another from Man United. Once you go into midfield as a full-back, you’ve got to make sure that person doesn’t turn and play a ball in behind you.”
