The executive vice-chairman is to step down at the end of the year, with his departure having been announced in the immediate aftermath of United’s involvement in the failed European Super League breakaway plans.
Woodward took over from departing chief executive David Gill in 2013, having joined United’s commercial department after advising club owners the Glazers during their takeover of the club in 2005.
He has brought considerable commercial nous to United’s boardroom, but his record in the transfer market has been less successful.
Woodward oversaw a series of big-money signings which failed to bring back the glory days to United, with the club having won just one FA Cup, one League Cup and the Europa League since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as manager in 2013.
