MANCHESTER UNITED mascot Fred the Red summed up the mood at Old Trafford after the club’s 2-1 loss to Brighton.

The Red Devils imploded in the first half due to a brace by Pascal Gross who opened the scoring after half hour.

Things didn’t get better for United throughout the game.

And their performance was too painful to watch for club mascot Fred the Red.

At one point, he was captured leaning on a goalpost turned away from the action with his head in his hands.

He seemed to be the visual representation of how United’s supporters were feeling as boos echoed around the Theatre of Dreams.

United’s cause wasn’t helped by the scout’s namesake and club star Fred, who had a nightmare in the middle of the park.

The Brazilian was at fault for Brighton’s second goal and was promptly hauled off early in the last period.

And fans on Twitter joked that Fred the Red would’ve done a better job on the day than the midfielder.

One fan reacted under the image released by B/R Football: “They would have been better putting Fred the red on instead of Fred the so called midfielder.”

While another consoled the mascot saying: “Come On Fred you just happen to share the same name with the worst player on the pitch and it’s not your fault.”

A third quipped: “Fred just realised that shifting the goalposts isn’t going to stave off the inevitable for ManU!”

Fred the Red’s reaction was mild compared to the bunch of United fans who started fighting amongst themselves during the match.

The chaos on the pitch spilled into the South Stand where two supporters clashed for an unknown reason.

But the pair simmered down after a brief period of grappling that ended with a hostile stand-off.

United’s horror start to the season has led to boss Erik ten Hag launching a surprise bid for former West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic.

The move has shocked fans and pundits alike with club legend Gary Neville admitting he’s been left speechless by the offer.
