Manchester United were counting their blessings in their 1-0 win over Wolves in a match that saw Matheus Cunha produce an early contender for ‘miss of the season’.

The forward had the perfect opportunity to put his side ahead at Old Trafford in their first Premier League game of the season after some fine work from Matheus Nunes, who ran through the heart of the Man United team.

After crossing the ball into the box, the ball fell to Cunha at the far post who fired an effort towards goal, but saw his effort clip the post as it flew into the stand behind.

The Brazil international couldn’t believe that he’d missed the target and knew that it could prove costly in the context of the game.

Discussing the miss on talkSPORT, analyst and former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy said: “It’s the worst miss of the season, that’s for sure.

“A really, really bad miss. One you never want to see again.”

After riding their luck, Man United looked to punish Wolves and got their reward through a headed effort from Raphael Varane 14 minutes from full-time after an excellent break forward from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The defender darted off to celebrate with the supporters after putting the Red Devils 1-0 up, a lead that talkSPORT commentator Sam Matterface described as ‘undeserved’.

It had been a less-than impressive display for Erik ten Hag’s side who looked disjointed throughout.

Wolves made the Red Devils work for their win and Gary O’Neil’s side can count themselves unlucky not to come away with at least a point.

In fact, the club’s 23 shots on Monday night was the second most in a Premier League away game at Old Trafford since the 2003/04 season.

Only Chelsea with 25, in November 2005, have attempted more in a against United on their own patch.

And the Blues also lost 1-0 that day.
