Man rescued from Dover storm sewer Sunday evening

Dover #Dover

Rescue personnel work to hoist a man from a sewer near the intersection of Wooster Avenue and Front Street in Dover late Sunday night.

DOVER — Firefighters rescued a man who became trapped in a storm sewer along the Tuscarawas River near the Wooster Avenue bridge on Sunday evening, according to fire Capt. Michael Mossor.

Dover police called them to the scene at 9:50 p.m.

“We responded to find we could hear a person crawling or walking in the storm sewer,” Mossor said in a prepared statement. “We were not able to see him. He would not communicate with us but we could hear talking and walking.

“We heard a metal sound and him possibly fall and then we heard nothing. We suspected he fell and became injured or incapacitated. The Dover Wastewater Department was called to assist us at the scene,” Mossor said.

The sewer department found a connecting manhole about 50 yards from the entry, he said.

“When they removed the cover, we could see the victim, (at 10:39 p.m.),” Mossor said. “The victim was about 30 to 40 down below street level laying unconscious. The victim eventually woke up but was not communicating well.”

Firefighters set up technical rope rescue system. The victim was pulled from the hole at 11:30 p.m.

The Dover Fire Department took him to a Canton hospital for treatment of injuries that Mossor described as serious.

“It is unknown why the victim went into the storm sewer,” he said.

Dover firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Dover Police Department, Dover Waste Water Department, Dover Street Department, New Philadelphia Fire Department, Stone Creek Fire Department, Strasburg Fire Department, Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

“I would like to make special mention of our dispatchers at the sheriff’s office as they are extremely skilled and helpful when things get busy and hectic on a scene like this,” Mossor said.
