Manchester City’s contract offer lined up for Lionel Messi in the event that he chooses to leave Barcelona this summer has seen a reduction, and is now valued at around €500 million, according to the latest reports.
The saga surrounding the future of the Argentine is showing no signs of slowing, with the player himself insistent on announcing his decision publicly and personally – but not until after the current campaign has come to a conclusion.
Subsequently, stories surrounding the potential suitors and packages that could be prepared for one of football’s all-time greats are continuing to circulate. The latest of those concerns Manchester City – who were reportedly the favourites to sign Messi towards the end of the 2020 summer transfer window.
However, due to the player determined avoid a legal challenge against Barcelona in court, City ultimately missed out and the player stayed at the Camp Nou for the 2020/21 season.
The latest suggestion from the Manchester City perspective is that they are now inclined to make a reduction on the contract offer that was on the table last season. According to Ian McGarry of the Transfer Window Podcast, the value of the contract offer is now around €500 million spread over the next eight to ten years.
The reason for the reduction, according to McGarry, is mainly due to two reasons: another season passing by since their last offer, and the determination to strengthen significantly at striker in the same window. City see the signing of a younger version of Aguero to replace the Argentine this summer as a ‘priority’, according to the same report.
The offer for Messi is also based upon the following criteria: up to three years at the Etihad Stadium before moving to the MLS, and then becoming an ambassador for the City Football Group.
We are gearing up for possibly one of the most exciting summer transfer windows since the takeover of Manchester City, and with the likes of Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland being linked with the Etihad Stadium, you don’t want to miss a single moment!
