Maine shooting updates: Manhunt for Robert Card after ‘22 killed’ at Lewiston bar and children’s bowling party

A manhunt is currently underway to catch the “armed and dangerous” person of interest wanted in connection to two mass shootings in Lewiston, Maine, that left up to 22 people dead.

A gunman opened fire in the Sparetime Recreation bowling alley and then the Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant at around 7pm on Wednesday night.

Terrifying surveillance footage grabs, shared on Facebook by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, showed the shooter armed with a rifle.

An intensive manhunt is now under way for 40-year-old Robert Card, who has been described as a person of interest in the shootings.

Mr Card is a member of the US Army Reserves and a certified firearms instructor, who officials said had recently made threats to carry out a shooting at a National Guard facility and had reported mental health issues, including hearing voices.

His whereabouts are currently unknown though his car – a 2013 white Subaru – has since been located in the town of Lisbon.

Residents in both Lewiston and Lisbon have been urged to shelter in place.

A co-owner of the bar in Lewiston, Maine, where a gunman carried out a shooting rampage has spoken out of the “nightmare” after a “fun night playing cornhole” turned into a tragedy.

Kathy Lebel co-owns Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant – the second location targeted by the mass shooter on Wednesday night.

She told The Lewiston Sun Journal outside a local hospital that she wasn’t at the bar at the time but heard how her staff and patrons ran for their lives when a gunman entered and opened fire.

“It was just a fun night playing cornhole… it’s the last thing you’re expecting, right?” she said.

“I still feel like this whole thing is a nightmare.”

Survivors reveal their children were taking part in bowling league at time of shooting

Terrified parents have revealed that their children were taking part in a bowling league when the gunman entered the bowling alley and opened fire.

The mass shooting unfolded at around 6.56pm on Wednesday night when a man armed with a rifle stormed into Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley popular among families and children.

Riley Dumont told WMTW that she was spending the night at Sparetime with her young daughter and her own parents.

Her daughter was taking part in the children’s bowling league when they suddenly heard gunfire.

“I heard a really loud bang,” she said.

“I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but my dad looked at me,” she said, adding that he is a retired police officer.

Ms Dumont said her father jumped into action, ushering people into a corner and putting tables over them as protection, while she lay her body on top of her daughter.

“It felt like it lasted forever,” she said.

A man who survived the horror mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, has revealed how he hid down a bowling alley lane in a desperate bid to escape the gunman.

Brandon told The Associated Press that he was at the Sparetime Recreation bowling alley on Wednesday night when gunfire suddenly erupted in the family-friendly establishment.

“We were inside, just a normal night of bowling. Out of nowhere he just came in and there was a loud pop,” he said.

At first, Brandon said he mistook the noise for balloons popping before he turned and saw the gunman brandishing a rifle inside the bowling alley.

The horror shootings took place across two locations on Wednesday night – at a bowling alley and local restaurant.

The first location targeted was Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley popular among families and children.

Lewiston city councilor Robert McCarthy said that there was a children’s party going on there at the time.

The second shooting took place around four miles away at the Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant – a large restaurant complete with 10 pool tables and TVs to play major sports events.

The restaurant had posted on Facebook that it was hosting an “industry night” that night.

“INDUSTRY NIGHT TONIGHT!! You work in the bar/restaurant industry? You get 25% your bill !!!!” it said.

Initial reports suggested that there may have been a shooting in a third location at a Walmart Distribution Centre but this later turned out to be incorrect.

Walmart released a statement late on Wednesday saying: “There was no shooting on Walmart’s property. The distribution center was locked down and police searched the facility. They did not find anything and no one was hurt.”

Restaurant says ‘heart is crushed’ over shooting

“My heart is crushed. I am at a loss for words,” the post shared early on Thursday morning read.

Just hours before the shooting, the bar had promoted its “industry night” on the Facebook page.

Robert Card’s family members have revealed their shock that he has been named a person of interest in the mass shootings in Maine.

The 40-year-old’s sister-in-law told The Daily Beast that the family was “shaken” by the news – and that she was speaking to law enforcement about the massacre.

“I am with police right now and my children [are] terrified and shaken, so I do not have a comment on anything right now,” she said.

Police in Maine named Mr Card as a “person of interest” in the shootings and warned that he should be considered “armed and dangerous”, with members of the public urged not to approach him.

Mr Card is a US Army Reservist and a certified firearms instructor, meaning he is well-trained in the use of firearms.

Police appear to hone in on area in Lisbon

Police appear to focusing on an area in Lisbon, Maine – where Robert Card’s vehicle was found abandoned on Wednesday night.

“Due to the ongoing investigation, Mollison Way will be closed until further notice. River Rd will be closed from Locust St to South Ave. Residents of River Rd will be allowed into the closed area. Thank you for your cooperation,” Lisbon Police said in a post on X.

The Sun Journal reported that Lisbon PD is recommending residents continue to shelter in place “with an emphasis on residents between Mill Street in Lisbon Center, along the Rt 196 corridor east to Main Street in Lisbon Falls”.

It is not clear if Robert Card is thought to be in that area.

Death toll from mass shootings remains ‘fluid’, says officials

In a late-night press conference, Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck refused to give a specific death toll saying the situation remains “very fluid” at this time.

Gun safety advocates lash out over lack of measures in Maine

Maine lacks several major types of gun safety laws, including assault weapons regulation, universal background checks, and “red flag” laws that allow law enforcement to temporarily disarm people legally deemed dangerous, according to Brady, a gun safety advocacy group.

“A recreation center. A bowling alley. A neighborhood bar. Places Americans frequent and should feel safe… these are the crime scenes of multiple shootings tonight in Maine,” said Kris Brown, president of Brady, in a statement.

At a reunification center in Lewiston’s “sister city” Auburn, just across the Androscoggin River, some families were discovering that relatives who had been at the bar and bowling alley had been killed in the shooting, Auburn Mayor Jason Levesque told reporters.

Officials were interviewing witnesses of the shooting “of all ages” at an undisclosed safe location on Wednesday night, Mr Levesque said.

Authorities urge residents to stay in their homes

“I had my back turned to the door. And as soon as I turned and saw it was not a balloon – he was holding a weapon – I just booked it,” he said referring to the shooter.

Brandon said he scrambled down the length of the alley, sliding into the pin area and climbing up to hide in the machinery. He was among a busload of survivors who were driven to a school in the neighbouring city of Auburn to be reunited with family and friends.
