Magda Szubanski Won’t Apologise For Handmaid’s Tale Joke About Scott Morrison Picture

Magda Szubanski was one of many people who reacted to the photo of Scott Morrison that was released over the weekend.

The Prime Minister was snapped writing a likely heartfelt message to the Queen after the death of Prince Philip.

There were loads of references on social media to The Handmaid’s Tale and how it seemed odd that Mr Morrison’s wife, Jenny, was several steps away from him and watching on while he did his business.

Magda was reacting to a tweet that said: “Good morning to everyone else to whom this feels creepy, chilling, terrifying, ominous, enraging, despairing and utterly, completely f**king depressing.”

The TV star and comedian added: “I genuinely thought this was a photoshopped Handmaid’s Tale meme. But no. It’s 21st century Aussie life.”

The Kath & Kim star copped some flak for the post, with some people saying she was unfairly criticising the Prime Minister and his wife.

However, after the storm in a teacup gathered pace since the weekend, Szubanski has explained she’s not sorry.

“Let me be clear… I’m not actually making a disparaging comment about Jenny. I just genuinely thought it was a meme!” she wrote on Twitter.

“Simply stating facts. Nor will I be forced into an apology for…nothing I see what the Christian Soldiers are doing here. They have drawn a ‘pink line’ & I’m the Big Game. Let the fat shaming begin!”

She also went in on people who criticised her for bringing Jenny into the tweet, which she didn’t.

Magda clarified that we need to call things out when they deserve it.

“The PM has weaponised Jenny. He has confirmed she is basically a quasi policy maker,” she wrote on Twitter. “‘I spoke to Jenny about this…I spoke to Jenny about that’.

“She doesn’t deny this or ask it to stop. First Ladies have the right to opt in or out. Thérèse Rein opted in Margie Abbott opted out.”

While she was bombarded by loads of negative comments, she was also supported by many others who reckon she has every right to criticise the Prime Minister.

“A huge thank you to all of you beautiful tweethearts who have supported me through this orchestrated bit of bulls**t pile on!” she said.
