Looney explains how Steph, Klay and Draymond changed the league

Kevon Looney has been one of the unsung heroes of the Warriors’ dynasty. Since he was drafted in 2015, Looney has seen – and contributed to – a lot of winning.

And he’s watched the big three of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green build a legacy in the Bay Area. 

When asked about the trio’s legacy on Wednesday, Looney had high praise.

“It just shows how special of a trio they are, that they were able to win under different circumstances, different teams, different eras, different styles of play,” Looney said.

Indeed, when Looney first entered the league, the Warriors were bursting onto the scene as a powerhouse. They were coming off a championship season in 2014-15 and then won 73 games the following year. While they fell short in the NBA Finals in 2016, the Warriors rebounded – albeit with the addition of Kevin Durant – to win back-to-back trophies and make three NBA Finals through the 2018-19 season.

And now, after a two-year hiatus – and a much different NBA landscape from 2015 – the Warriors are back in the NBA Finals in 2022, once again behind Curry, Thompson and Green.

“When they first won it, the NBA was a lot different, its style of play was a lot different,” Looney said. “For them, they kind of changed the game. Draymond, he just revolutionized the big man spot, got rid of the power 4 position.”

The three will go down in history as “winners” who changed the league, according to Looney. 

“They’re going to have their individual accolades, but I think they’re mostly going to be remembered as being dominant, winning, not even being highly-touted,” Looney said. “Not high draft picks, all of them. They’re not All-Americans, things like that. But they came in and changed the NBA.”
