Lone Star Halloween costume kits poke fun at Texans, Austinites. Social media abuzz

Halloween is right around the corner, and a set of faux Halloween costumes pokes fun at Texans and the state’s happening capital.

Earlier this week, the Do 512, a site dedicated to highlighting events and things to do in the Austin area, posted a series of faux Halloween costume packs poking a bit of fun at area Austinites. In a set of photos, products are shown resembling the classic Spirit Halloween costume packages with the accessories listed, detailing specific Austinite starter kits of sorts.

One of these costumes pokes some fun at Texans, in general. For example, the “Texan in the winter” costume comes with flip-flops, shorts and a T-shirt, highlighting the penchant to roll with the summer style even in the cooler months.

Austin’s Silicon Hills has been touted as the next Silicon Valley for years as the area is home to a number of tech companies and remains a magnet for tech talent.

One of the costumes is called the “Austin transplant who works in tech and lives at skyhouse,” referencing the city’s thriving tech sector and a high-rise apartment building near the Rainey Street Historic District, a bustling restaurant and nightlife hub near Lady Bird Lake. 

The costume comes with a series of norm-core chic staples such as a puffer vest, chinos and loafers with a Lime rideshare scooter to boot. 

The “girl having a bachelorette party in Austin” costume comes with a “sparkly cowboy hat & boots,” balloons and a “night out on dirty,” the latter referencing a section of town known for its bars and nightlife.

Situated near Tesla’s Giga Texas factory and the home of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Texas’ capital is home to no shortage of electric vehicles. A ‘Tesla driver with custom plates” costume offers another tongue-in-cheek costume pack, noting that, as part of the costume, the person “won’t stop talking about NFTs” — a reference to the popular digital assets and seemingly another nod to the area’s tech-heavy economy.

The costume kit also comes with a standard baseball cap with a Tesla logo, and the package says that the person has “a podcast you should check out.”

As of Thursday morning, the Instagram post had received more than 7,700 likes and dozens of comments and reactions online.

“This has got to be one of the best ‘Austin-y’ posts I’ve ever seen. Coming from a local who owns a unicorn NFT,” said one commenter in a post.

The bachelorette party costume was particularly referenced in the comments section.

“The Texan in winter one is not lying at all,” said another commenter.
