Logan Allen’s career-high 10 strikeouts lead Guarians to 5-0 win in Baltimore

BALTIMORE — Rookie left-hander Logan Allen had a career afternoon on the mound with 10 strikeouts and Cleveland’s offense came through with a big inning as the Guardians picked up a 5-0 win against the Orioles at Camden Yards.

Allen pitched a career-high seven innings and was in complete command against Baltimore’s lineup, surrendering just three hits and walking a pair for his second straight quality start. The Guardians backed Allen with four straight hits in a four-run seventh inning that put the game out of reach.

It marked the first back-to-back wins for Cleveland since May 13-14 against the Angels as well as the Guardians’ fifth shutout win.

Cleveland got to Orioles lefty reliever Cionel Perez in the seventh. Myles Straw reached on an infield single before Will Brennan drilled a base hit past Ryan Mountcastle at first. Gallagher drove Straw in with a base hit to right and went to third on Kwan’s RBI double.

Amed Rosario smashed a ground ball to second with the infield drawn in, but Adam Frazier’s throw to the plate was off line and Gallagher scored with a slide. Kwan raced home from second as the ball got away from Baltimore catcher James McCann to put Cleveland in front by five.

Brennan who doubled in his first two at-bats and scored the game’s first run on Gallagher’s RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth, marked his first career three-hit game.

Allen is just the eighth pitcher in franchise history to record a 10-strikeout game in his first seven career starts. Triston McKenzie last accomplished the feat in 2020. Allen joins Herb Score (twice in 1955), Luis Tiant (twice in 1964), Sonny Siebert (1964), Bob Feller (1936), Gus Dorner (1903) and Danny Salazar (2013).

Score accomplished the feat in five of his first seven career games.

Gallagher, playing in front of a dozen friends and family members from his hometown of Lancaster, Pa., had his best offensive day since joining the Guardians with three hits and a pair of RBI. He also threw out speedy Cedric Mullins on a steal attempt in the bottom of the first after Mullins drew a leadoff walk.

José Ramírez, fresh off his game-winning double in Sunday’s win against St. Louis, smashed a two-out double in the third. It was the 536th extra-base hit of his career, moving him out of a tie with Nap Lajoie for sixth place on Cleveland’s all-time franchise list.

Ramírez is now two extra-base hits behind Ken Keltner (538) in fifth place. Since 2018, Ramírez leads all MLB hitters with 347 extra-base hits.
