Liz Truss resigns LIVE: PM steps down after just 44 days at Downing Street

Liz Truss has resigned as Prime Minister following a tumultuous six week premiership.

The outgoing Prime Minister was under fire after her Home Secretary resigned and her party appeared to be in disarray following a chaotic vote on fracking.

This comes after a series of u-turns following former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s disastrous mini-budget which eventually saw him replaced by Jeremy Hunt.

Beginning what was to be a tense evening for the Conservative Party last night, outgoing Home Secretary Suella Braverman criticised PM Liz Truss in a blistering resignation letter as she left her post on Wednesday, to be replaced by Grant Shapps.

The vote over fracking happened amid much confusion over where the vote amounted to a confidence vote in the PM.

There were then reports that the Conservative Party Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip had resigned. Contrary to reports, however, both remain in their posts for now.

This morning, the Prime Minister met with the chair of the 1922 Committee of backbench Conservatives Sir Graham Brady, Downing Street has said.

The Prime Minster made a statement at Downing Street today to announce her departure.
